(mi-kuni) The fusion of two Japanese words meaning “Beautiful Forest”. Mikuni has a symbiotic relationship with nature and the variety of edible foods that are found within it. We chose this name to honor the environment in which most of our products grow.
Mikuni Wild Harvest is a company committed to the exploration of nature’s greatest bounty… food.
It is safe to say that the organic food trend has evolved into something more than a catchphrase used by food writers in their weekly columns. The organic food movement is a way of life for millions—people who are conscious of what they put into their bodies and how their food is grown. Our growing fear of commercially farmed foods is valid; we live in a day and age when many corporations are quick to compromise quality and food safety for production and profit. Inasmuch as the organic food movement has garnered attention in the last decade, Mikuni believes that we are at the beginning of another movement, one that explores the abundance of richly flavored foods found exclusively in the wild.
Every member of the Mikuni family began as a mushroom forager. For each of us, what started as an enjoyable pastime has evolved into a fulfilling career. Mikuni started exporting mushrooms to Japan and Europe in the early eighties. In 2001, Mikuni changed focus to the development of a boutique line of sustainable wild foods for restaurants and gourmet retail outlets. Since then, our company has grown from three committed individuals slugging it out in a basement office, to a team of like-minded individuals with distribution centers throughout Canada and the United States. Although the size and direction of our company has changed dramatically over the years, our concept and commitment has not. It has always been Mikuni’s goal to provide our customers with the highest quality of unique and sustainable wild foods.
Let’s face it, if you and I have the same capabilities, the same energy, the same staff, if the only thing that’s different between you and me is the products we can get, and I can get a better product than you, I’m going to be a better chef.Thomas Keller
